Hey travelers! After visiting over 50 countries, I’ve learned that the best travel moments often happen off the beaten path. While the popular spots are definitely worth visiting, there’s something magical about discovering hidden gems that few people know about. That’s why I want to share with you five underrated destinations that deserve more attention this year. These places offer incredible experiences without the crowds you’ll find at famous tourist spots.
First up is Cappadocia, Turkey. Yes, the hot air balloons are spectacular, but what many visitors miss is the incredible network of underground cities. Goreme is home to Derinkuyu, an ancient underground city with 8 levels!
Imagine walking through tunnels lit by narrow windows, descending deeper than most subterranean structures, and learning about how early Christians hid here from invaders. It’s like stepping into a scene from a sci-fi movie but with real historical significance. The best part? You can explore this amazing site without spending a fortune.
Another Turkish gem that deserves attention is the town of Gokcehisar. Nestled in the Cappadocia region, this town offers breathtaking views of the famous fairy chimneys. But unlike the more crowded Uchisar, Gokcehisar has a relaxed vibe that many visitors appreciate. 
What makes Gokcehisar special is its position on a hill that offers arguably the best panoramic views of the entire Cappadocia region. You can rent a bicycle and explore the narrow streets lined with traditional Turkish houses, or simply find a cafe with outdoor seating and enjoy the views while sipping local tea.
Moving continents, let’s talk about Xaltocan in Mexico. This small town in the state of Hidalgo is a true hidden gem that many travelers miss. Founded during the Aztec era, Xaltocan was one of the most important towns in the region before the Spanish conquest. 
Today, the town preserves its colonial architecture with houses painted in vibrant colors, just like in the nearby more famous town of San Miguel de Allende. But unlike its popular neighbor, Xaltocan remains relatively quiet, allowing visitors to experience the authentic local culture without large crowds. Don’t miss trying the local chocolate-making tradition, which has its roots in Aztec history.
For a unique natural wonder, I highly recommend visiting the Maras Salt Flats in Peru. Unlike the famous Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, Maras offers a different kind of salt landscape experience. 
What’s fascinating is that these salt fields have been in use since Incan times and are still operated by the same family! You can visit the salt pans and learn about the traditional method of salt production, which involves channeling water from the Mantaro River to create natural evaporation pools. It’s a sobering experience to see the scale of salt extraction and learn about the history behind it.
If you’re interested in photography, you absolutely need to visit the White Deer Eco-Art Park in Japan. Located in the town of Goyohara, this unique destination combines art installations with natural landscapes. 
The highlight is the wind turbines set against the backdrop of the Setana Mountains, creating a stunning contrast between modern art and nature. In addition to the impressive wind installations, the park features deer sculptures and other art pieces scattered throughout the landscape. It’s particularly magical at sunset when the golden light illuminates the turbines and casts long shadows across the valley.
Last but not least, I want to introduce you to the town of Bledu, Slovenia. Wait, no, that’s actually the famous Lake Bled. But let’s talk about the nearby village of Bled Castle ruins. 
While Lake Bled is certainly worth visiting, the castle ruins nearby offer a different perspective on Slovenian history. The castle, once a military stronghold, has been partially restored and now serves as an exhibition space showcasing the region’s architectural heritage. It’s a peaceful place to visit, away from the more touristy areas of the lake. From here, you can also see the Three Peaks that dominate the skyline of Lake Bled.
When planning your trip to these underrated destinations, I recommend researching local festivals and events. Many of these places have unique celebrations throughout the year that add another layer to your experience. Also, consider traveling during shoulder seasons to avoid peak crowds while still enjoying pleasant weather.
